A490 bolts are made from an alloy steel rather than a medium carbon steel, resulting in a higher strength fastener. The bearing surface shall be flat and washer-faced, and the point is chamfered. ASTM A490 bolts are a heavy hex head structural bolts designed for structural steel connections These bolts are equivalent to ASTM A325 bolts in application and geometry, but are made to a higher strength. ASTM A490 bolts are intended for structural applications which means they are not only of a stronger grade but also feature shorter threaded lengths of the bolt to avoid interference with the joint.
